Comprehensive Military & Veteran Support Services

The Veterans' Services at BHSU are extended to current members and veterans of the United States Armed Forces as well as their dependents. Our staff researches education benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the state of South Dakota, as well as state/federal organizations to ensure our veterans recieve the best experience possible. We're here to offer a place for independent study and a safe atmosphere where veterans can feel free to share military experiences.

Our Statement on Recruitment Practices:

Black Hills State University is committed to ethical, transparent, and student-centered recruitment practices. The University refrains from high-pressure recruitment tactics and does not engage in practices designed to pressure prospective students, including Service members, into immediate enrollment decisions.

  • Specifically, Black Hills State University:
  • Does not make multiple unsolicited contacts (three or more) by telephone, email, text message, social media, or in-person visits for the purpose of securing enrollment.
  • Does not engage in same-day recruitment and registration activities intended to compel prospective students to enroll during a single interaction.
  • Provides prospective students sufficient time to review educational options, degree requirements, costs, financial aid information, and available military education benefits before making enrollment decisions.
  • Ensures that recruitment communications are informative, accurate, and responsive to student inquiries rather than coercive in nature.
  • Trains admissions, enrollment, and military-affiliated personnel to conduct recruitment activities in accordance with Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding requirements, the Principles of Excellence, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Respects the decision of prospective students who indicate they do not wish to receive further recruitment communications and complies with applicable privacy and communication preferences.

Through these practices, Black Hills State University demonstrates its commitment to supporting informed educational choices and maintaining recruitment standards that are consistent with the expectations of military students, veterans, and their families.

These policies that we comply with are based on directives from Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding (DoD MOU) we have signed, the Principles of Excellence established under Executive Order 13607, and South Dakota Board of Regents policies governing ethical recruitment and student services.
