The scope of a search is determined by the type of position. All full-time tenure/tenure track faculty positions must be advertised at a national level, which means advertising in at least one national publication. Some positions (such as part-time faculty, mid-level administrators, etc) require only a regional or limited national search. It is suggested you advertise in regional publications that are most likely to bring in the most inclusive candidate pool.
If a position will include an international search resulting in foreign candidates, please see the section on Recruitment of Foreign Workers.
ADVERTISING
Advertisements and announcements are used to recruit as many qualified applicants as possible. The position announcement is a complete description of a vacant position, application procedure, and any other relevant information, and is used often for direct mailings. An advertisement is formatted specifically for placement in a publication, and is an abridged version of the position announcement. Minimal academic and experience requirements and desirable qualifications are specified in both. The advertising plan should project sufficient time for advertisements to generate applicants, preferably a minimum of four weeks after publication.
Currently, all faculty and NFE positions are also posted with HigherEdJobs.com in addition to the system-wide on-line employment system. CSA positions can be posted to HigherEdJobs.com by making that request to the Human Resource Office.
Advertisements should be as explicit as possible regarding available position(s), responsibilities involved, and qualifications necessary. Advertisements should include the following:
All ads should indicate the following
Faculty and Non-Faculty Exempt positions are typically announced through the BHSU and BOR employment web page, HigherEdJobs.com, and the South Dakota Department of Labor.
In addition to the above, the vacancy can be advertised in several other ways, depending upon the level of the position and the difficulty in attracting qualified applicants.
Positions shall not be posted with any other entity until Human Resources has placed the opening on-line. This is important as the university no longer accepts paper applications and utilizes the applicant tracking process through the online employment system. In addition, the text for the position opening has already been entered at the time the Request to Recruit Position is originated, and should be used (in full or in part) in any advertisements. All applicants shall apply for positions through the on-line employment system. Departments may view the on-line employment system to determine if Human Resources has placed their opening.
Once Human Resources has posted the recruitment opening, HM/HMA’s may also place position openings with any appropriate national publication or trade journal. If there is a cost, the appropriate job advertisement (information may be obtained at the online employment system if not available at the department) and requisition(s) shall be prepared at the department level and forwarded through the system to the Office of University Support Services for placement. All charges for the placement of these advertisements shall be borne by the requesting department. If there is no cost, the department may place the advertisement.
In addition, the Office of Marketing and Communications shall place an advertisement for CSA, NFE and part-time, temporary faculty positions in the local newspapers - the Black Hills Pioneer and the Rapid City Journal. The ad will then be included in a variety of other local newspapers at no additional cost - (Weekly Prospector, and the Black Hills Weekly Group publications (e.g. Belle Fourche Post & Bee, Meade County Times-Tribune, Newell Irrigator, Northern Hills Advertiser). That office will not place faculty openings in the local newspapers, other than part-time temporary faculty positions unless contacted by the requesting department. Marketing and Communications will place the opening for one week
Marketing and Communications shall gather opening information from the on-line employment system by viewing current positions at the BHSU and BOR employment web page. Departments should be aware that the cost for the advertisements placed by Marketing and Communications will be paid for centrally and there will be no cost to the departments.
Black Hills State University administration has requested that no additional advertisements shall be listed in the local newspapers other than the advertisements placed by the Office of Marketing and Communications.
Examples of position announcements and abbreviated advertisements are in the Appendices. The abridged announcements are especially useful in newspapers or other periodicals in which longer advertisements would be cost prohibitive.
