Black Hills State University students in the University Honors Program will soon have a new pathway to law school through an agreement with the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law.
The memorandum of understanding, approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents, creates the Honors Law Opportunity Program, allowing up to five qualifying BHSU Honors Scholars each year to earn pre-admission to USD Law while completing their undergraduate studies at BHSU.
Students may apply for the program during their sophomore or junior year. Those accepted will have the opportunity to secure early admission to law school and compete for a scholarship for their first year at the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law.
"This agreement provides an excellent opportunity for our Honors students who are interested in a career in law," said Dr. Katrina Jensen, director of the University Honors Program. "Securing a spot in law school as early as their sophomore year at BHSU will help our students plan their career pathways."
To remain eligible, students must complete all requirements to graduate as a University Honors Scholar, successfully complete and defend their Honors Capstone Project, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
The partnership provides motivated students with a clear and accelerated route to legal education while also helping address workforce needs across the state. By encouraging graduates to build their careers in South Dakota, the program supports both student success and the long-term strength of local communities.
