The Black Hills State University Foundation officially announced the public launch of its “Taking It to the Next Level” Capital Campaign during a campus event held Monday, April 27. The multiyear campaign is a bold initiative designed to expand student opportunities, strengthen academic programs, and secure the University’s future for generations to come.
The campaign, which quietly began in May 2022, has already generated significant support. Through the generosity of 6,850 donors, the campaign has raised $54.1 million toward its $58 million goal. Of the total raised, $22.3 million has come through estate gifts, and $32.1 million will be permanently endowed to support long-term sustainability and impact.
“We are not starting from zero—we are building on incredible momentum,” said Steve Meeker, vice president of University Advancement. “With less than $4 million remaining to reach our goal, this campaign is a testament to what is possible when people come together with a shared vision.”
Campaign funds have been directed toward key priorities that directly impact student success and institutional growth, including:
- $43.3 million for scholarships, expanding access to higher education
- $9.3 million in operational support, enhancing programs and campus initiatives
- $1.5 million for a nursing addition at the BHSU Rapid City location, strengthening regional healthcare education
At the announcement event, held in the Joy Center on the BHSU campus, speakers highlighted how the campaign will prioritize funding for student scholarships while also supporting essential university operations that enhance academic programs and the overall student experience. These combined investments are designed to ensure Black Hills State University remains positioned to meet the evolving needs of students while sustaining quality and innovation across campus.
“Through this campaign, we are affirming our shared belief in the power of education, the promise of our students, and the lasting impact this institution has on the Black Hills region and beyond,” said BHSU President Steve Elliott.
Additional details and future announcements related to the "Taking It to the Next Level" Capital Campaign will be shared by the Black Hills State University Foundation in the coming months.
