Black Hills State University (BHSU) is pleased to announce its designation as South Dakota’s second Purple Heart University, granted in recognition of its continued commitment to veterans killed or wounded in combat. The designation was presented by Major John Lundeen during the inauguration of President Steve Elliott on April 11.
“Being recognized as a Purple Heart Campus is a true honor for the University in many ways,” said Scott Hanson, business manager of Facilities Services. “It shows the commitment the University has in supporting our Veterans and the commitment the Veterans have shown. We have numerous Purple Heart Warriors in our community, and this shows that their heroism is truly appreciated in every way possible.”
The university's close relationship with the U.S. armed forces began during World War II as the site of the Army Air Forces 93rd College Training Detachment, where over 1,000 cadets trained and studied. It was the only university in South Dakota to be part of the College Training Detachments program. Currently, there are over 130 veterans enrolled at BHSU.
BHSU’s recent efforts to support Purple Heart recipients include reserving two parking spaces on campus for recipients of the award, one near the Student Union and one in the parking lot of the Donald E. Young Sports & Fitness Center. The university has also reserved two further parking spaces for other veterans. Individuals need not be enrolled in the university to use the parking spots.
“As a retired veteran, I deeply respect the sacrifices these Purple Heart recipients have made and am proud to work at a university that supports our veterans,” said Deborah Liddick, assistant director of Facilities Services.
