Political Science

Program Overview

Do you like discussing ideas about freedom, equality, security, justice, and power? Are you interested in current affairs? Do you follow U.S. and global developments? Do you want an exciting career that will open your eyes to the world around you?

Political science focuses on the theory and practice of government and politics at the local, state, national, and international levels. As a discipline, we are dedicated to investigating the values, theories, institutions, practices, and relations that constitute public life. Our research pursuits and modes of inquiry encourage civic responsibility, public vigilance, and global awareness.

Political science at BHSU is taught within four subfields: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. We also offer courses in public administration, methodology, and American Indian politics. The department is especially strong in combining theory and research with engagement on real-time policy challenges. In other words, we emphasize the consequentiality of political science to contemporary issues and events.

Political science faculty members at BHSU also promote learning environments that welcome, explore, and critique a diverse array of political and intellectual viewpoints. We believe the study of politics will inherently foster disagreement and debate. Indeed, the dialectical exchange of competing ideas is what makes politics so illuminating.

Political Science majors at BHSU master critical analysis, research, and writing skills. These skills are always in demand by employers, which allows the individual equipped with a degree in Political Science to pursue a wide variety of career opportunities in the private and public sector. A Political Science degree at BHSU offers:

  • A challenging academic environment that helps inspire students to excel.

  • Internship opportunities with state and federal representatives.

    • There are a variety of internships with state and federal governments available for qualified students. We have lists of internships available in South Dakota and we are contacted regularly about internships in the state legislature and in Washington, D.C. Every year a BHSU student participates in the South Dakota Legislative Internship Program.

  • Small classes and direct contact with professors.

  • Recent job placements and graduate school placements include:

    • Community Development Specialist-Planner, Black Hills Council of Local Governments
