If you like learning about the body and how it works, playing sports, participating in exercise, or helping others reach their goals, then Exercise Science is the major for you! This program is very hands-on and includes many opportunities to practice the skills needed to be in healthcare or physical wellness-related careers. You will learn how to train the body for overall health and longevity or to maximize performance in a sport. You will learn all the foundational science skills you will need if you would like to pursue a graduate program in healthcare. Bonus, our faculty are fun, innovative, and dedicated to all their students!
Graduates of the program are prepared to enter a variety of fields related to exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, and personal training. In addition, graduates are prepared for advanced study in the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, exercise physiology, chiropractic, nursing, and physician assistants. Many go into graduate programs to become highly specialized. Apply today!

2 EXS 101 The Exercise Science Major: This course will explore the foundations of exercise science, including the history and evolution of the field. Students will gain insight into career opportunities and professional organizations while exploring concepts related to health and human performance.
4 EXS 250/L Human Anatomy and Physiology & Lab: This is a one-semester human anatomy and physiology course. The structure and function of the entire human body is covered, including all of the organ systems.
3 EXS 280/L Fitness Assessment & Lab: The student will receive individual instruction on body composition, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility assessment techniques.
3 EXS 285 Exercise and Chronic Disease: This course is intended to describe epidemiologic trends associated with chronic, non-communicable disease in the US and globally, along with current evidence supporting exercise as ways to manage, prevent, or treat those diseases. Students will gain a deep understanding of links between exercise behavior, modality, and prescription as they correlate to prevention and management of human disease.
3 EXS 286 Medical World Origins: This course is a study of the composition of scientific terminology, with an emphasis on medical language. It is specifically designed to prepare students for continued study in health professional or graduate school programs.
3 EXS 300 Intro to Research: A study focused on the development of skills related to research, writing and presentation.
4 EXS 350/L Exercise Physiology & Lab: Study of physiological responses and adaptations to exercise related to human performance limitations, training effects, and health-related benefits.
4 EXS 353/L Kinesiology & Lab: An understanding of human performance as it is affected by kinesiological, anatomical, and mechanical factors.
3 EXS 354/L Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries & Lab: Course teaches general and emergency treatment of athletic injuries, competitive or noncompetitive. Emphasis is placed on practical preventive and rehabilitative exercises and taping/bandaging/wrapping.
3 EXS 425/L Exercise Programming for Special Populations & Lab: In this study of the techniques of health-related fitness and wellness evaluation, emphasis will be placed on individual programs for wellness development and reducing risk for chronic disease.
3 EXS 452 Motor Learning & Development Science: The application of principles of learning in the psychomotor domain. Included will be a review of the physiological basis of skill behavior, state of the performer, and didactic strategies in motor learning and skill performance.
4 EXS 454/L Biomechanics & Lab: This course emphasizes the mechanical principles of human movement (including muscular and skeletal principles) during physical education, wellness, and sport.
2 EXS 462 Exercise Leadership: This course is designed to help students learn the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be an effective health/fitness instructor. The emphasis is on healthy lifetime fitness.
3 EXS 482 Theory of Strength Training & Conditioning: This course is designed to help students learn the specific scientific foundation knowledge and the practical/applied knowledge necessary to be an effective strength and conditioning coach. The emphasis is on optimal human performance in sport.
2 EXS 489 Applied Human Performance: An advanced course studying the application of the fundamentals of strength and conditioning and exercise.
5 EXS 494 Internship: Applied, monitored and supervised, field-based learning experience for which the student may or may not be paid. Students gain practical experience; they follow a negotiated and or directed plan of study. A higher level of supervision is provided by the instructor in these courses than is the case with field experience courses.
