The Donald E. Young Center houses an Aquatic Center that is available to students and members of the community. There is a large pool for lap swimming and a smaller pool for exercises. The operation of the pools in the Aquatic Center must meet the needs of a diverse group of users. To meet this goal, a middle of the road approach has been selected for water temperatures. The small pool is approximately 89º-93º, large pool is 78º-82º and air temperature is 85º.
The Aquatic Center contains:
6-lane 25-meter pool containing 200,000 gallons of water
3-lane 50,000 gallon instructional pool with hydraulic moveable floor
350 seating capacity
Adults and seniors may swim laps in the large pool or exercise in the small pool during lap swim. Youth may swim laps if accompanied by a parent/guardian. Rec swim is for all ages.
Call 605.642.6096 for information.
Check out Pool Rules.
Black Hills Gold Swim Team
If you are between the ages of 5 and 18, plunge into the Young Center pool for swim team practice. Coaches work intensively with the four groups (developmental, advanced, junior varsity, and varsity) on improving stroke technique, building endurance, setting goals, and preparing for competition. If you are comfortable swimming in a swimming pool or have prior swimming experience, and you want to learn more about swim team, please stop by the pool during swim team and visit with Coach Brenda Hendricks. During the summer Swim Team meets Monday through Friday, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. and during the academic year 3:45 - 5:15 p.m. For info call Brenda Hendricks, 605.645.5101.
Spearfish Aquatics Club
The Spearfish Aquatics Club now has a ONE-TIME use day pass for those who want to "tryout" the pool during their swim times. The cost of a day pass is $3.00 per person. Checks are preferred and made out to Spearfish Aquatics Club, but cash is acceptable.
The Spearfish Aquatics Club is a community group that is renting the Young Center Aquatic Center. Membership dues are $25 a month and are due on the first of each month by check. You can pay the lifeguards or mail a check to Spearfish Aquatics Club, P.O. Box 1404, Spearfish, SD 57783.
