Group Programs

Equipment & COLP Leader(s) Provided

How to request a program:

Send an email to christine.mccart@bhsu.edu (COLP Advisor) at least two weeks in advance. Include the following information:

  • Name of requested program
  • Name of group, and ages, approximate number, and any special goals.
  • Name, email, phone, and address of contact person
  • Requested date(s) and time(s)

 

 

Boilerplate:

Acceptance subject to facility and COLP Leader availability. Minimum price set by minimum group size. Non-refundable deposits may be required for programs that require staffing two weeks prior to program. Waivers & acknowledgement/acceptance of risk form signed by guardians and minors required for participation. Chaperones must be present for youth programs. Programs do not include use of Young Center facilities outside of program. Instructor approval needed for use of personal gear.

Initiatives & Low Challenge Course: Full Day

Time: 6 hours

Activities: These physical and mental activities develop cooperation, communication, decision making, problem-solving, and leadership and teamwork skills, leading to mutual support and trust within the group. Participants are challenged to take physical and emotional risk. Some of these activities may involve more perceived risk and challenge and include props such as wooden platforms, boards, ropes and cables.

Time: 1 hour

Activities: Bouldering, harnesses, roped top-rope climbing with COLP belayers. Great for youth birthday parties!

Activities: Climbing technique, gear, knots, belaying, top-rope climbing.

Outdoor Climbing Fun

Activities: We set up the ropes; participants top-rope climb with COLP belayers.

Activities: Climbing technique, gear, knots, belaying, top-rope climbing. Other skills depending on ability of group and skills of COLP Leader.

Activities: Equipment, coaching, rappelling with belay backup, 4th class ascending on fixed rope.

Flatwater Canoeing Fun

Time: 1 hour (does not include travel time)

Activities: Basic skill instruction & paddling on calm lake.

Location: Iron Creek Lake

River Canoeing, Kayaking, or SUPing Skills

Time: 5 hours

Activities: Skills instruction, wet exits, ferrying, eddy turns, peelouts, LNT, group travel protocols on Class I-II water.

Pre-requisite: Flatwater paddling experience, water comfort, fitness.

Location: Sand Creek, Redwater or Belle Fourche River as flows allow

Time: 1 hour

Activities: Safety, casting skills, fishing.

Required: All participants must have a valid SD fishing license on their person

Activities: Materials, tools, and tying a couple of flies you can keep

Activities: Learn how to use a map and compass to find your way in the backcountry. Practice your skills on a course in the forest.

Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop

Time: 1 hour

Activities: Don’t be “that guy!” Learn the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics. Participate in age and group appropriate hands-on activities to help you respect the land and other recreationists.

Location: Young Center or nearby outdoor area to be arranged.

Activities: Learn more about the Great Outdoors through outdoor activities designed for your group.
