The Master of Science Curriculum & Instruction (MSCI) graduate program at Black Hills State University facilitates professional growth while preparing professionals for leadership in roles beyond the classroom. As a practicing teacher, you will bring your learning directly to your classroom while you develop an advanced knowledge of theory and practice. In your final year of the program, you will develop a relevant action research project to inform your practice as well as your community. Graduates with a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction may seek additional career opportunities such as a state or district curriculum director, teaching and learning specialist, content leader within a building or district, or instructional coach.

The K-12 Reading Specialist program is delivered with a Master of Education in Reading. The 35-credit program emphasizes professional practice in the field of reading and addresses all International Reading Association standards for reading specialists and literacy coaches.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SECONDARY EDUCATION (PROJECT SECOND)

This degree is designed to provide preparation for post-baccalaureate secondary teacher certification in South Dakota. It is designed for individuals with bachelor’s degrees from accredited colleges or universities that can lead to secondary content teaching areas. This 35-credit degree program allows you to become fully certified and complete a master’s degree within one year. The master’s degree can be pursued through the online Project SECOND.

MASTER OF ARTS in TEACHING IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

The Master of Art in Teaching (MAT) in Special Education is designed for students who want to work with students who receive special education services and who have an undergraduate degree in a non-teachable subject. The MAT in Special Education will lead to initial certification in K-12 special education with a graduate degree in teaching. Students will take classes for initial teacher certification and classes specific to special education licensure.
