Forensics Team (Speech and Debate)
Forensics at BHSU is strictly co-curricular and exists as an adjunct to the academic program. The team meets in Plato's Cave (Jonas 208A) and is open to all BHSU undergraduate students. Travel is offered to students demonstrating the appropriate effort, aptitude, and reliability (a cumulative GPA of 2.5 is also required). Joining the Forensics team is a fun way to develop oral communication and critical thinking skills. BHSU participates in what is sometimes called "Parliamentary" debate which involves writing a case in support of a resolution in a limited amount of time (between 15-30 minutes). Competitors have the chance to debate a wide range of topics. We do not require that our debaters have previous experience. Individual Events include prepared and limited preparation events. These events include, Persuasive Speaking, Informative Speaking, Speech to Entertain, Communication Analysis, Prose, Poetry, Impromptu Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Dramatic Duo, Dramatic Interpretation, and Program Oral Interpretation. Get involved with BHSU's award-winning Jacket Journal newspaper. The Jacket Journal newspaper is open to all students regardless of major. Editorial, production, photography, and advertising staff positions are available each semester. Writers are always welcome to submit news and features. Photographs, graphics, and comics are also accepted for review and possible inclusion. The newspaper offers a discussion forum, and encourages articles offering diverse voices, news from all colleges, departments, and programs, and Letters to the Editor as well as content published to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Black Hills State University's student run organization, 89.1 & 90.7 FM The Buzz. Bringing the best alternative music, news, and information to western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and parts of Montana and North Dakota. The Buzz FM also streams worldwide at BHSUMedia. KBHU-TV
KBHU-TV provides opportunities for students to explore their creative interests in video and television broadcasting. KBHU-TV produces a weekly newscast and entertainment programming. Our projects are distributed worldwide via our YouTube channel, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The BHTV studio is located on the lower level of Jonas Hall. BHSU Public Relations Club is a professional development group for students focused on career enhancement, community involvement, conferencing, competition and networking for internships and careers across the country.
