1986 Alumni Award Recipients
Outstanding Alumnus, Norbert Weisbeck, ’72
Weisbeck, general manager of the Wyoming general office of New York Life Insurance, has been selected as this year’s BHSC Outstanding Alumnus. He graduated from BHSC with a degree in business administration. He was also a defensive back on the Yellow Jacket football team, receiving all-conference honorable mention during his senior year. In addition to receiving numerous company awards from New York Life, Weisbeck was named to Who’s Who in the West, Outstanding Young Man of America, and nominated for boss of the year by the Ogden Chamber of Commerce. In 1985 he was selected as a member of the regional board of directors for the Zion First National Bank system.
1988 Alumni Award Recipients
Distinguished Alumnus, Paul Dingeman, ’53
A 1953 graduate, Dingeman pursued a career in business, but returned to the classroom in 1966. He served as principal and superintendent in Jeffers, Minn. From 1971 to 1978 he was principal of the senior high school in Lakefield, Minn. He has served as principal of Belle Fourche High School since 1978, and in 1984 the high school was recognized as one of the top schools in the nation. He holds a master’s degree and an educational specialist degree in school administration from the University of South Dakota.
Special Achievement, Lionel Bordeaux, ’64
Bordeaux, president of Sinte Gleska College, graduated from BHSC in 1964 with a composite major in social science and history. He received his master’s degree from the University of South Dakota and was a doctoral candidate at the University of Minnesota. In addition to serving as college president since 1973, he has been active with the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, serving as a councilman and as chairman of the education committee. Through his leadership Sinte Gleska College became a fully accredited reservation-based institution of higher education, the first of its kind at the bachelor’s degree level. He was also responsible for establishing a reservation-based master’s degree program in elementary education.
Special Service, Donald Young, ’40
Young’s participation and support of the college has not wavered since he first set foot on campus. He has been a student, an athlete, a coach, a professor, and administrator, and an alumni director at BHSC at one time or another during the past 50 years. He served his country during WWII and in Korea and retired in 1974 from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a captain. He served his community as well. From 1967 to 1976 he served as Spearfish mayor. He also participated on the Sixth District Council of Local Governments, was a representative to the governor’s council, a representative to the Northern Hills Drug and Referral Center, and a South Dakota safety representative. The new physical education facility, the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center has been named after him.
1990 Alumni Award Recipients
Distinguished Alumnus, Jim Hood, ’69
Jim has served on the BHSU Alumni board since 1972, one term as president and three terms as treasurer. He has also been a member of the BHSU Foundation since 1986, serving a two-year term as president. Hood’s involvement at BHSU includes serving on numerous search and screen committees and on the Madeline Young Speaker Series Committee. As a member of the Lawrence County legislative delegation, he played an important role in obtaining authorization and funding for the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center. He also serves as legal counsel to BHSU. He was named the 1990 Friend of Education by the South Dakota Legislature, and was also recognized by the Spearfish Education Association and the state elementary school principals association for his support of education.
Special Achievement, Roger Tellinghuisen, ’75
Tellinghuisen has served as South Dakota’s attorney general since 1986. From 1979 to 1986 he served as Lawrence County deputy states attorney and as Lawrence County states attorney. Prior to public service he was in private law practice. He was named a centennial alumnus for the state of South Dakota during its centennial year in 1988. He was also the recipient of the outstanding alumnus award by the division of business at BHSU in 1988.
1991 Alumni Award Recipients
Distinguished Alumnus, Joe Rovere
Joe Rovere has worked for Black Hills Corporation for 30 years and is currently vice president of public affairs/district administration for the utility, mining and oil company. He has also been a member of the BHSU Foundation since 1989.
Special Achievement, Spike Jorgensen, ’65
Spike Jorgensen has been named the Alaska superintendent of the year and is one of the finalists for the national superintendent of the year. He has been superintendent at Alaska Gateway School District for the last 12 years.
Special Service, Gary Pechota, ’71
Gary Pechota has been president and chief executive officer of the South Dakota Cement Plant since 1983. He is a past president of the BHSU Alumni Association and was named a Centennial Alumnus for the state of South Dakota during its centennial year.
1992 Alumni Award Recipients
Distinguished Alumnus, Harvey Krautschun, ’70
Krautschun is a highly respected member of the South Dakota House of Representatives where he serves as vice chairman of the Appropriations Committee. He is also a Charter Life Underwriter with New York Life. Krautschun is past president of the BHSU Alumni Association and is also a member of the Green and Gold Club.
Special Achievement, James P. Leonard, ’65
Leonard ranks among the world’s best money managers according to Nelson’s Publications. He supervises $25 million in client assets at his Avon firm, The Leonard Management Group. For firms with less than $200 million under management in 1989, Leonard was ranked No.1 among the 25 best managers of fixed-income or bond portfolios. His rate of return was 25.6 percent.
Special Service, Ed McLaughlin, ’50
The mayor of Rapid City since 1991, he has actively supported BHSU and distinguished himself in the areas of education, business, and community service. He is past president of the BHSU Alumni Association and the Yellow Jacket Foundation, and was chairman of the Lyle Hare Stadium Committee.
Dakota Territory/Spearfish Normal, Myriam Friggens
Myriam Friggens received the first "Dakota Territory/Spearfish Normal Award." This award is given to alumni who attended Dakota Territory Norman and/or Spearfish Normal from 1883 to 1940 and who have distinguished themselves in support of BHSU. Friggens recently established a scholarship, the Myriam Ackley Scholarship Fund, for elementary education students.
