Leatha Potter is originally from the Madison, SD area. Her B.S. in Elementary Education was earned at Dakota State University, including a concentration in Junior High/Middle School Education. Her M.S. in Elementary Reading and Literacy was earned from Walden University. Ms. Potter has worked at elementary and middle schools at all grade levels as a classroom teacher, reading coach, and literacy specialist/ coach/ advisor.
Prior to arriving at BHSU, Ms. Potter worked for the Department of Defense Education Activity, where she taught military-connected children in the UK and in Japan for eighteen years. Prior to that experience, she worked in Arizona and Nevada, teaching Navajo children and later working for a charter school using an early virtual education model. These experiences provided opportunities for understanding the educational challenges presented by students from varied backgrounds and abilities and learning how to best serve the needs of all.
Ms. Potter teaches undergraduate-level courses in K-8 Language Arts, Literacy Assessment and Remediation, and Classroom Management. She has research interests in linguistics, the acquisition and development of language skills, and the history of the English language.
Ms. Potter’s non-academic interests include reading, baking, and quilting. She and her husband reside in Spearfish.
