Matthew Pawlus

I study the fascinating field of molecular biology which seeks to characterize how biological processes are regulated by the chemicals which compose living things. I have a B.S. in Biology from Colorado Mesa University, a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado Anschutz, and have conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Washington’s Institute for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine in Seattle. My academic interests include pursuing an understanding of how environmental factors impact molecular processes and developing molecular tools to aid in detection and isolation of environmental toxins. Additionally, I have studied tumor angiogenesis and how oxygen levels influence cancer. I have also dedicated significant time to lobotomizing fish and growing mini-brains in dishes while conducting research into the biology of brain regeneration using zebrafish, human stem cells, and organoid models. I have a passion for active and experience-based learning, including mentoring undergraduate research projects and scientific discussions and presentations and enjoy incorporating these into my classes.
