Dr. Mary Anne Fleury is originally from the Chicago area and attended the University of Dayton in Ohio for her undergraduate degree in Elementary and Special Education. Her education at the graduate level includes a Master of Arts in Learning Disabilities with certification in teaching the emotionally disabled, coursework for licensure as a Director of Special Education, and a Ph.D. in Special Education with an emphasis in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and a minor in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, all from the University of Northern Colorado.
Dr. Fleury previously worked at the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) as the Alternative Dispute Resolution Specialist in the Exceptional Student Services Unit, training educators and administrators across the state of Colorado on the prevention of disputes in special education. Prior to her work at the CDE, she was a Director of Special Education for seven years in Colorado. Her background also includes being an educational coordinator, special educator, general educator, and special education advocate over the years. Dr. Fleury has a passion for bringing collaboration into the special education process, which ignited when she founded a nonprofit for parents and educators in the 90s.
In 2022, Dr. Fleury joined the faculty at BHSU. Along with teaching special education undergraduate and graduate level courses at BHSU, she coordinates the Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education, which supports those entering the educational field for the first time. Her research interests include special education facilitation, conflict resolution within the special education process, MTSS, and identifying ways to improve higher education programming in the field of special education.
Personally, Dr. Fleury is married with four grown children (and one grandbaby) who are on the east and west coasts. She loves traveling, experiencing new places, and visiting her children whenever possible.
