Black Hills State is joining the global effort Giving Tuesday on May 5 to respond to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Funds raised by BHSU through this effort will assist students who are struggling with basic needs like housing, food, or everyday living expenses. The Student Association and the BHSU Foundation are spearheading the Giving Tuesday effort. In 2018, a few BHSU supporters set up a fund to provide financial support to BHSU students in need. This fund has been invaluable and has provided much needed assistance to students such as eyeglasses, groceries, car maintenance, and personal hygiene supplies. Unfortunately, due to the sudden financial hardship from COVID-19, the needs of BHSU students are becoming much greater than the money available.

“In times like these, we must do all we can to help our students. We do not want their studies to be compromised due to this sudden and unforeseen circumstance. The Jackets In Need Emergency Fund helps us help our students during this time of unexpected changes and disruption,” said BHSU President Laurie S. Nichols.

Juliana Nielsen from Brandon, who serves as the BHSU Student Senate President and is majoring in business administration, says students are facing unexpected financial difficulties and appreciate alumni and donor support.

“Currently many students are struggling financially due to COVID-19. Any amount donated on Giving Tuesday will relieve many BHSU students of financial worries,” said Nielsen. “With a financial donation, students will be able to focus on their academics so they can continue to pursue their BHSU degree.”

#GivingTuesdayNow is a global event when individuals, communities, nonprofits, and corporations from around the world will come together to give back and support one another during a time of crisis. BHSU is joining this global effort with a focus on securing additional emergency funds for students.

“Thank you for your consideration of a gift of any level and any size,” said Nichols. “Please know it will make a world of difference to our students and as they finish their degrees.”
