BHSU-RC, DSU collaborate to meet student needs

BHSU-RC Campus
There is a growing need for people educated in computer networking, a field which focuses on the interconnections between hardware technology and the mapping and exchanging of information.

To meet this need, Black Hills State University (BHSU) and Dakota State University (DSU) are collaborating to offer DSU’s associate degree in network and security administration through BHSU at BHSU-Rapid City. DSU currently offers the degree on campus, online and at the Community College for Sioux Falls. The request was approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents at their April 1 meeting.

“We’re very pleased to collaborate with Dakota State University on this associate degree,” said Dr. Chris Crawford, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Black Hills State University. “Our market research has convinced us that an offering in network and security administration will be received positively in the Rapid City area. In this program students will take their general education classes with BHSU and their computer classes through Dakota State,” Crawford stated.

The degree focuses on computer networking and theory, preparing students for careers as system administrators, network system engineers, systems and network analysts, network application developers, and technical consultants.  The associate degree is also stackable into the bachelor’s degree.

Dr. Jim Moran, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at DSU, said “This was a special opportunity to start a collaborative program to serve the needs of the region. Students can get a marketable DSU degree without leaving the area by taking courses from both BHSU and DSU. It’s a win for everyone.”
