Community invited to support students during BHSU Scholarship Gala

Picture of a speech and audienceMark your calendars for the stellar event of the summer season! The fifth Annual Black Hills State University Scholarship Gala, “Helping our Students Shoot for the Moon and Land among the Stars,” will take place on a starry Saturday evening, Aug. 24, at the Joy Center at BHSU in Spearfish.

The BHSU Scholarship Gala, with a celestial theme to commemorate the 50th year of the 1969 moon landings, maintains its ultimate goal: to raise additional funds for BHSU academic scholarships. Scholarship funding allows many students to reach the stars and accomplish their dreams. This year’s goal is to raise $200,000 in scholarships through entertainment and fine dining, a silent and live auction, and a festive atmosphere of giving throughout the evening.

First Interstate Bank has carried the honor of “Title Sponsor” since the Gala’s inception in 2015, and has generously increased their annual donation of $5,000 to $10,000 this year to support this dream of raising $200,000.

Carissa Deming, music composite major from Newcastle, Wyo., said she feels “overwhelmingly appreciative” of local businesses and community members who support higher education and BHSU students.

“Without these generous sponsors standing behind students, like myself, we wouldn’t be able to participate in the wealth of educational opportunities BHSU has to offer,” said Deming. “Their donations and contributions inspire me to pursue my career goals and to one day find ways to give back to my local community and support future generations of students.”

Hans Nelson, chair of the BHSU Scholarship Gala Organizing Committee and director of corporate and career development, said, “It’s local businesses like First Interstate Bank that recognize the positive impact that BHSU has on our community. First Interstate understands that if we encourage more students to come to BHSU, it increases the chances that some will stay and help to grow our local economy. Additionally, we enjoy working with First Interstate Bank President, TJ Gusso, and his local team. They are great supporters of all things BHSU - from academics to athletics - and they truly embrace their role as a supportive local business aimed to better the community they serve.”

It is recommended that tickets are purchased in advance, as this event sells out quickly. BHSU is grateful to all sponsors and guests for their continued support and generosity!
