Photography field work by students inspires new exhibit at BHSU

Combine a semester of landscape photography study with seven days of intense field work in southern Utah, and the result is a compelling new exhibit at Black Hills State University. Join photography students, Mason Moir of Rapid City, Madison Hand of Midland, and Bryce Boser of Box Elder, for an opening reception of their exhibit “Adventures In The Waterpocket Fold” Thursday, April, 26 from 4-6 p.m. in the Upper Photographers’ Gallery in Jonas Hall.

“Adventures In The Waterpocket Fold” is an exhibition of 30 photographs taken by Moir, Hand and Boser while on a photographic exploration and adventure in Southern Utah during their spring break this semester.

Madison Hand commented, “The work that makes up the “Adventures In The Waterpocket Fold” show is the result of long days and short nights. We had no idea what we were in for, but we knew how fortunate we were to go on this trip so we made sure to take advantage of every situation we could to get the very best images. This trip was an experience we will never forget.”

Steve Babbitt, professor of art and mass communication/photography said, “This exhibition is the result of seven days of intense field work in southern Utah and a semester of study of landscape photography by three of our most creative, talented and advanced photography students. They were often up and ready for the sun an hour before dawn and still making images as the stars began to appear. They worked extremely hard and didn’t let up.”

The Upper Photographers’ Gallery is located on the main level of Jonas Hall on the Black Hills State University campus in Spearfish and is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The exhibit will be displayed throughout the summer.

BHSU offers a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography. The photography program at BHSU offers classes that span all aspects of the profession from basic to advanced studio and commercial photography. Graduates will find career opportunities in photojournalism, commercial photography, and fine art photography.

BHSU has among the finest darkroom and digital imaging facilities in South Dakota and the surrounding region with three black and white and color labs, a film developing area, and an imaging lab. The digital imaging lab is complete with multiple Mac computers, scanners, and various large format and desk-top printing stations. Students also have access to a 2,000 square foot commercial studio and a new alternative silver and digital printing lab.
