BHSU announces kickoff event for largest scholarship campaign in University history
BHSU announces the launch of the largest scholarship campaign in University history. The public is invited to the "Because of You, Anything is Possible" Capital Campaign Kick-off Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. in the Joy Center on the BHSU campus in Spearfish. [TAB]Scholarship money for students at Black Hills State University will continue to increase, thanks to the largest scholarship campaign in University history. The public is invited to attend the "Because of You, Anything is Possible" capital campaign kick-off Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. in the Joy Center on the BHSU campus in Spearfish.
[TAB]The ambitious capital campaign is focused on raising money for scholarships, along with pursuing support for athletic facilities.
[TAB]Out of the six state institutions, BHSU currently ranks fifth in scholarships awarded to students. Steve Meeker, vice president for University Advancement, said the campaign is concentrating heavily on reducing that deficit.
[TAB]"BHSU currently awards over a million and a half dollars in scholarships yet we still lag behind. Scholarships are more critical than ever because of the investment it takes for students to obtain an education. Alumni and friends of BHSU have been extremely generous and we out pursuing even more to help our students," said Meeker.
[TAB]Increasing scholarship support for students has been a top priority for BHSU President Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr. since he was appointed the leader of BHSU in 2014.
[TAB]Since 2014, BHSU has launched several new scholarships for students. Two examples include the academic Presidential Medallion Scholarship ranging between $2,000 and $16,000 per student and the Northern and Southern Hills Jacket Incentive Scholarships for Black Hills-area students ranging between $2,000 and $4,000.
[TAB]"As a first-generation college graduate myself, I know first-hand how scholarships support and impact students for years to come. It makes me proud when I hear our BHSU students talk about one day giving back the way the community has given to them through monetary support," said Jackson. "Because of your support, students will have the resources to become the next generation of leaders in our communities. That groundwork is happening right here at BHSU."
[TAB]Jackson said gifts from individuals, alumni and corporations are crucial in supporting BHSU students with the necessary funds to attain a high-quality education.
[TAB]More than 600 students graduate from BHSU annually, including the largest number of education graduates of any school in the state of South Dakota.
[TAB]"We invite the community to join us in this effort as we assist deserving students in achieving their dreams of earning college degrees," said Jackson.
