BHSU Campus Garden to host gardening workshop series, free and open to the public
Black Hills State University is hosting free garden workshops at the campus community garden located behind the Yellow Jacket Apartments on Hillsview Road. The workshops will run on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. beginning June 5 and ending July 17. The public is invited to participate in these free events which will cover a broad range of topics from building your first vegetable garden to ideas for home gardening with cover crops.
The summer gardening season is here and Black Hills State University is helping the Spearfish community get their hands dirty by offering free gardening workshops at the campus community garden located behind the Yellow Jacket Apartments on Hillsview Road.
The garden workshops will run on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 pm beginning June 5 and ending July 17. The public is invited to participate in these free events which will cover a broad range of topics from building your first vegetable garden to ideas for home gardening with cover crops.
"We are excited to share our experiences regarding cover crops on a home garden scale for soil health and pollinator friendly habitat," said Jeremy Smith of Cycle Farm.
The campus garden started in 2008 and since then has been providing fresh, organic produce to the campus dining services and helping participants develop their gardening acumen. Last year the garden moved to a community model, providing participants the opportunity to share in the harvest, as well as learn the ins and outs of weeding, tilling, and harvesting organic crops. Members of the Spearfish community and BHSU students are invited to participate in cultivating and harvesting the garden for a minimal cost.
"Learning about organic gardening has been particularly interesting as a BHSU campus garden participant, especially organic practices starting with seeds and soil," said Raeann Mettler, biology instructor at BHSU. "My mother and I are enjoying spending time together outside, learning about gardening from others and also sharing our knowledge with others in the garden. From volunteer opportunities and the upcoming workshop series, the campus garden provides a wonderful learning environment for the entire community and an asset to the BHSU campus."
