BHSU to offer certificate in social media

The South Dakota Board of Regents recently granted Black Hills State University approval to begin offering a new certificate in social media.

Black Hills State University is offering a new certificate in social media following South Dakota Board of Regents approval this week.

Dr. Mary Caton-Rosser, associate professor of mass communication, said BHSU is the perfect place to initiate the certificate because of the University's progressive media program.

"Students recognize the need for social media use and are working to apply the skills they have, but earning the full certificate will add dimension and credibility for the students upon graduation," said Caton-Rosser.

Caton-Rosser said social media interaction is growing across many fields including business, science, the arts, music, and any subject matter seeking to find engaged members and connect to audiences.

"The social media certificate at BHSU was researched and designed to engage students of all backgrounds, subject matters and experiences, because now it's a completely acceptable - and even an expected-practice to use social media in professional workplaces," said Caton-Rosser.

The social media certificate includes 12 total credits, or four courses, including the requirements of Social Media Survey, Media Law, and two electives from a set list of courses in business administration, mass communication, and outdoor education.

Most of the courses required for the new social media undergraduate certificate are offered online, including a new Social Media Survey course offered online for the first time this summer.
