BHSU Sustainability promotes bicycle awareness ahead of pathway opening
BHSU Sustainability is ramping up efforts to promote bicycling as an active mode of transportation during Spearfish Bike Week Aug. 27-Sept. 3. The City pathway connection to campus via Oliver Street will be complete in November.
Campus landscaping changes over the summer created a new bike and walking path entrance to the campus on Oliver Street. The new sidewalk is ADA-accessible and connects the University to the neighborhood along St. Joe Street.
To celebrate the bike and walking path connection, the Sustainability department on campus encourages students and community members to participate in Spearfish Bike Week Aug. 27 &ndash Sept. 3.
Petrika Peters, sustainability coordinator at BHSU, said the University is working with the City of Spearfish and nonprofit organizations to increase cycling as an active-mode of transportation.
"The pathway from Oliver Street to the BHSU campus will be completed in November," said Peters. "BHSU is a pedestrian-friendly campus. The path is just one of many initiatives we&rsquore working on as part of Bike Spearfish!, a new initiative to increase cycling on and off campus."
BHSU Sustainability and the Environmental Sustainability Student Organization invite students to gather on campus and ride together to Spearfish Bike Week events.
Throughout Spearfish Bike Week, students and the community are also invited to take selfies on campus at BHSU, in Downtown Spearfish, or on the Spearfish Bike Path and post the images to social media using hashtags #BikeSpearfish and #BHSU to be entered into a prize drawing.
