Business graduate thanks faculty, staff for collegiate success
Ekenna Anya Gafu will earn his degree in business administration with an emphasis in economics and finance Dec. 12.
Ekenna Anya Gafu was part of the Yellow Jacket football team where he learned discipline on and off the field from head coach John Reiners.
"I will never forget beating our rivals, South Dakota School of Mines. It's something I will always look back on, that joyous feeling and holding that trophy after winning it," he said.
Anya Gafu plans to use the lessons he learned on the field to pursue his career in business or perhaps coaching at the collegiate level after earning his degree at Black Hills State University Dec. 12.
Anya Gafu will graduate with a degree in business administration with an emphasis in economics and finance. He plans to pursue his master in business administration while serving as a graduate assistant coach for a football team.
"I'm excited to see what doors are opened after earning my degree," Anya Gafu said. "This will provide me so many opportunities."
He's considering many possibilities including serving as coach of a collegiate football team like his mentor Reiners or perhaps pursue work as a stock broker. Either one, he said, will fulfill his dreams.
Anya Gafu enrolled at BHSU and traveled from Sacramento, Calif., to study at the BHSU School of Business. He said the University's AASCSB Accreditation enticed him to earn a business degree in Spearfish.
"It's really rare and to know that it has that prestigious accreditation and the experienced professors and counselors reinforces this was the right decision for me," he said.
Anya Gafu said BHSU offers endless resources for students, from access to professors, quiet spaces to study and friendly staff to answer questions.
As he finishes final exams, Anya Gafu said it has hit home that he will soon be leaving the family he built at BHSU behind, and the feeling is bittersweet.
"I really enjoyed my time at Black Hills State," Anya Gafu said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity to walk and earn my degree this Saturday."
