BHSU named to Best for Vets: Colleges 2016 for third consecutive year

Black Hills State University was named to the Military Times' Best for Vets: Colleges 2016 for the third consecutive year.

Military Times selects schools based on an array of services, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties. Universities are also selected based on its veteran culture on campus.

"BHSU appreciates the sacrifices that veterans of every generation have made in service to the country and their communities," Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., BHSU president said. A veteran himself, President Jackson notes that the University is proud to welcome veterans and is dedicated to supporting their academic success.  

BHSU is consistently recognized nationally for service to military students. The University has been named to the list of Military Friendly Schools by Victory Media for six consecutive years the University also was named to the Military Times "Best for Vets: Business Schools" in 2013 and 2014. In 2015 BHSU was named a Top School in the Military Advanced Education (MAE) Guide to Colleges and Universities.

BHSU, the only comprehensive institution in western South Dakota, offers bachelors, masters and associates degrees. In addition to the classroom, online and evening courses offer flexible options to earn a degree. BHSU-Rapid City, located close to the Ellsworth Air Force Base where the military members' are stationed, also offers a variety of programs along with evening, online and daytime classes, as well.

BHSU offers a variety of services to help military members' with their academic needs. The University also offers student support services, including disability accommodations, free tutoring, scholarships specifically for student veterans, academic advising, financial aid counseling, career counseling and veteran's resources.

"I am very proud of this accomplishment and feel that BHSU is very deserving with our remodeled Vet Center on the main campus in Spearfish and reduced military rates for active service students attending BHSU-Rapid City," said Eileen Thomas, school certifying official for student veterans at BHSU.

The University also provides space for a student veteran center on campus and at BHSU-Rapid City as well, and is located in an area with excellent family and outdoor recreation.
