BHSU final fall semester Geek Speak to address world hunger
Dr. John Alsup, professor of math education, and Dr. Trenton Ellis, assistant professor of human services at Black Hills State University will discuss local and global hunger problems in their speech "Perspectives of Hunger" at the upcoming Geek Speak lecture series. The lecture will be last Geek Speak this semester and will be held Thursday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. in room 110 of Jonas Hall on the BHSU campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The struggles of hunger and poverty are problems faced by people around the world each day. Two Black Hills State University professors will address the topics of hunger in the next Geek Speak.
Dr. Trenton Ellis, assistant professor of human services, and Dr. John Alsup, professor of math education, will present "Perspectives of Hunger" Thursday, Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. in room 110 of Jonas Hall on the BHSU campus. The presentation, the final Geek Speak this semester, is free and open to the public.
Alsup spent time teaching mathematics in elementary and secondary schools in Tanzania. The experience sensitized him to look deeper into hunger problems around the globe which led him to attend conferences in South Korea, Russia and Brazil to learn more about the issue
"I will take a panoramic perspective of what I have seen since I traveled in 44 countries and lived in Africa and Brazil and to try to bring some focus in both positive and negative ways to the issue of hunger. We will look to some positive things we have done as a society and what still needs to be done," said Alsup.
Ellis will show the issue of hunger and food insecurity in the United States and how it relates to the production, distribution and consumption of food. He will try to reframe the issue as located at various points along the agrifood chain. According to Ellis, the lecture will help to improve attendees' understanding of the state of hunger in the 21st century-both domestically and internationally.
"It is important to talk about hunger because we all have a hand in the alleviation of hunger. The awareness and perception that there is a problem is what ultimately guides action to work toward alleviating the problem," said Ellis.
"It's really a shame and a travesty that with the wealth that we have there are so many people in poverty in this country," said Alsup.
Geek Speak attendees are encouraged to help alleviate hunger by bringing nonperishable food items and monetary donations to the lecture. All proceeds and donations will go to the Spearfish Food Pantry and the BH Student Pantry to help those in need.
