BHSU STUDENT TAKES EXPERIENCE TO THE FIELD
Black Hills State University student Adam Thomsen, mass communication and music composite major from Rapid City, gets ready to go live on KBHU at BHSU. Thomsen hosts a weekly sports radio program on the University radio station.
Black Hills State University student Adam Thomsen got experience in the field with a unique internship with a youth football league during the fall semester.
Thomsen, a mass communication and music composite major from Rapid City, spent part of his fall semester working with the Black Hills Youth Football League announcing at games for the Spearfish Rams. The internship not only allowed Thomsen to gain experience in the sports media field, but it allowed him to interact with the Spearfish community. Thomsen noted that he believes BHSU provides excellent opportunities for community involvement for students.
It&rsquos Thomsen&rsquos second year working with the football league. He previously worked with a Rapid City team. With his internship, Thomsen announces the players&rsquo names at games, helps call plays and chooses music. Thomsen enjoys having fun with kids, and helping them feel like they&rsquore a football star, he said.
I love working with kids. I like to make them feel like they&rsquore the best thing in the world," Thomsen said. "This has been a great experience."
Thomsen brings vast experience to the media field he began working in communications while still in high school.
During his junior year of high school, Thomsen worked at News Center 1. He would work from 5 to 7:30 a.m. each morning and then attend school. His love of broadcast spread to radio and he began working with the local radio stations 1380 KOTA and Classic Q 92.3.
"I just took an immediate love of it and how everything worked," Thomsen said. "You get to have a lot of fun with it."
He knew he wanted to attend BHSU for its sports media program, and through the program, Thomsen said he&rsquos been able to obtain tremendous internship opportunities that have given him extensive broadcast experience &ndash including his work with the Spearfish Rams.
"I have really grown into the professional world, working with other groups, with the community," Thomsen said.
Thomsen currently has a weekly sports radio show on KBHU-FM. He discusses the NFL, Fantasy Football League and gets listeners to call in and share their views on the latest sports news. Thomsen hopes to continue working in radio, one day working for ESPN Radio as a sports commentator.
In addition to his communication positions, Thomsen sings with the BHSU concert choir, is involved in the residence hall community council and is a member of a barbershop chorus in the community.
