My impression of Spearfish as an International student

Spearfish, South Dakota: A picturesque small town in the sacred Black Hills. One would not think of it as the first destination for international students. But this has been my home since August 2022.

" I realized that most of the time during the day, I kept comparing all my surroundings and my interactions to the ones I have back home, which is not a great mindset to start with. "

When I first arrived here, it was summer. I was surrounded by hills and dry air, while I was used to the humid weather near the coasts of my Mediterranean country. I realized that most of the time during the day, I kept comparing all my surroundings and my interactions to the ones I have back home, which is not a great mindset to start with.

It did not take me long to discover that this town had a tight-knit community that showered us with kindness wherever we went. We had a blast discovering the enchanting charm of the outdoor scenery. As internationals, we were well cared for by our hosts who volunteered to take us around the national monuments each weekend. We went on several trips to the canyon and saw how marvelous it is in different seasons. My favorite was fall. Nothing can beat the stunning hues of fall in Spearfish, a breathtaking display of bright and vibrant yellow, orange and red.

"Something about living in a place with a culture dating back to thousands of years of history adds to my fascination."

We eventually got to see Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Devil’s Tower, and the sacred land that surrounds it. I was in awe of the galleries and museums that showcase Native American artwork, along with how visitors and locals celebrate the region’s identity. Something about living in a place with a culture dating back to thousands of years of history adds to my fascination.

My impression of Spearfish would be incomplete without talking about how safe and affordable it is, how calm and tranquil the atmosphere is, and always suitable for a walk, unless a snowstorm decides to invade the area and force you to stay in your room. Somehow, snowstorms always happen when you need a break from academic stress, and they are a perfect excuse to stay in.

Spearfish is a place I did not know existed last year, yet now holds a piece of my heart. The warm welcoming spirit of it, and everyone’s appreciation for spending time with family friends is more than wholesome; which makes it the perfect environment for an international student to have a steady and productive life.
