Black Hills State University is one of six universities in an integrated system of higher education in South Dakota, governed by a single nine-member board of regents. Members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the SD Senate. The Board of Regents has constitutional authority to govern the public higher education system. Supported by an executive director and staff, the board provides leadership and sets policies for the programs and services delivered through its six universities and two special schools.
The University was established in 1883 when the Dakota Territorial Legislature chartered it as the Dakota Territorial Normal School. It gained university status in 1989, and today it is a diversified, comprehensive institution offering programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business, and education. BHSU emphasizes the preparation of k-12 teachers, human services, wellness, business, and biology professionals. BHSU offers many baccalaureate and select master’s degrees, generates new knowledge, promotes excellence in teaching and public engagement, and serves as a regional economic leader.
BHSU delivers its academic programs through three colleges: the College of Liberal Arts, Business and Natural Sciences, and Education and Behavioral Sciences. The University offers 56 bachelor’s, eight master’s, and five associate degree programs.
BHSU is accredited through The Higher Learning Commission; BHSU Education programs are accredited by CAEP and comply with South Dakota’s Department of Education guidelines. Business programs are accredited by AACSB International, the Music Education program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, and the Physical Education program is nationally recognized by NASPE.
BHSU-Rapid City campus offers educational opportunities for the state’s second-largest city. This location serves as the home of the West River Health Science Center, a coordinated effort between BHSU, South Dakota State University, and the West Area Health Education Center to provide a pathway to a degree in nursing to west river residents.
The University’s 103 full-time and 69 adjunct faculty members are committed to teaching, learning, and student success, as evidenced by the US News & World Report’s recent ranking of BHSU as No. 20 among Midwest regional universities for best undergraduate teaching. One University faculty and staff member said that the unifying commitment for all at BHSU is to “help students find their path.”
The efforts of faculty are complemented by an equal commitment from staff, students, alums, and community leaders who are passionate about the university, its mission, and the region in which it is located. Its centers and outreach programs serve as an economic engine, a base for faculty research projects, and a source of pride for the growing adult population in the area. While the University focuses on teaching and outreach, it provides opportunities for faculty to engage in research activities.
In fall 2022, BHSU enrolled 3,425 students, with a 6.4% increase in first-time undergraduate student enrollees and a 73% retention rate. BHSU continues to attract high-achieving, ambitious students who have an opportunity to experience academic life as an honors student. The University Honors Program enhances the university experience through diverse and thought-provoking classes, faculty mentorship, and a close- knit academic and social community. The faculty-to-student ratio is 18:1, giving students a personalized educational experience.
The campus has a robust student life program with several student clubs and organizations, including residence hall councils, academic clubs, intramural and club athletics, music groups, and social and recreational organizations.
Approximately 10% of students participate in BHSU’s Division II Athletics program. BHSU is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The University fields five men’s and nine women’s teams across
ten sports. BHSU has a total of 22 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships. The University has a legacy of championship rodeo teams and is a National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association member. The Yellow Jacket Foundation works diligently to support athletic scholarships.
The BHSU foundation is led by a 17-member board of directors, of which the President is an ex-officio member. The University also has the Yellow Jacket Foundation responsible for raising funds specifically for athletics. The assets of the Yellow Jacket Foundation are managed by a joint finance committee of which the President is an ex-officio member.
