Beginning in summer 2025, BHSU will be offering a new elective course for the Master of Science in Strategic Leadership program. The course, the Emotional Intelligent Leader, will be delivered by adjunct professor Dr. John Betterson and will examine how leaders can exercise emotional intelligence and strive to emphasize sustainability efforts in organizational life.
In today's workplace, many organizational leaders struggle with finding the right strategies and people to cultivate and sustain a healthy and thriving work environment. Team members also often expect their leaders to operate with empathy, trust, and compassion. These factors prompt the need for emotional intelligence in the workplace to sustain effective leadership. In this course, students will learn the importance of emotional intelligence and how to build and strengthen their emotional quotient.
"According to neuroscience, your gut is considered your second brain," said Dr. Betterson. "That said, when you experience gut feelings about a matter, a person, or what to say, this is your body's way of tuning you into your emotional intelligence. Listen to your body, listen to others, watch for helpful cues, use your leadership instincts, and let's seek to strengthen our emotional intelligence."
