Black Hills State University is ranked sixth among the top 20 affordable master's in curriculum and instruction online programs for 2018 by Best Value Schools. In a separate ranking, the online master’s in education in reading at BHSU was also ranked 19th among the top 25 programs of its kind. BHSU was the only South Dakota university listed in the rankings.

The rankings were created using the National Center for Education Statistics' College Navigator database to identify public and private (non-profit) colleges and universities offering master's degrees in ‘curriculum and instruction’ and ‘reading and literacy education’ online, respectively. Only programs with accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and average tuition rates of $20,000 a year or less were considered.

Factors considered for the listings included: program popularity, overall strength of online teacher education programs, accreditation, and affordability.

"Our online master’s in education graduate programs facilitate professional and leadership growth while preparing education professionals to offer the highest quality classroom experiences for students," says Tom Jackson, Jr., BHSU President.

BHSU has a legacy of preparing exceptional teachers and has the largest teacher preparation program in the state.
In addition to the online master’s degree programs that earned this national ranking, BHSU has a strong education program with several degree options:
  • Early Childhood/Special Education
  • Elementary Education
  • Special Education K-12
  • Math & Science Education
  • Physical Education
  • Science Education
  • Secondary Education (with programs in art, biology, business, chemistry, English, history, math, music, social science, Spanish, speech, and theater education)
The elementary education degree can be completed onsite at BHSU-Rapid City. BHSU graduates have a 100 percent pass rate on licensure exams. A high percentage of graduates from the BHSU education program are hired immediately in classrooms from kindergarten through grade 12. Many BHSU graduates go on to leadership positions in school districts in the region and nation.

From the rankings website: Black Hills State University offers a cheap MS in Curriculum and Instruction online that caters to the needs of practicing instructors by emphasizing hands-on work. Not only does the coursework encourage you to take what you’ve learned and immediately apply it to the classroom, but it also includes a required clinical practice experience during your final semester. Another perk of attending BHSU is its support of specialized training. In fact, the curriculum provides three different study plans: Technology Integrationist, Math Specialist, and Science Specialist. All three meet South Dakota’s requirements for their associated designations and can help you stand out from the competition as you advance in your career.
