Justin Varland, head of carrier sales at Apple and an alum of Black Hills State University, will return to his alma mater this month to help students prepare for life after graduation. Varland and other BHSU alumni will share their advice with students during the #adulting Seminar on the BHSU campus Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Joy Center.
Hans Nelson, director of Corporate Relations at BHSU and host of the #adulting Seminar, says this day-long seminar will provide students with answers to questions about the life skills necessary for success in the real world.
“Many students enter the workforce without knowing the basics of buying a home, purchasing insurance, or borrowing money,” Nelson says. “This seminar will help BHSU students prepare to be smart with the paychecks that come along with their first jobs post-graduation.”
The seminar will encourage engagement between BHSU alumni and students.
“We believe successful alumni leads to an even more successful university,” Nelson adds. This is strengthened two-fold through the #adulting Seminar: first, alumni are able to give back to their alma mater by helping soon-to-be-graduates, and second, students are able to launch themselves into post-graduation with resources and answers to questions that may not be practically answered in classes.
The seminar will start with mini-sessions, bringing in alumni (listed below) from relevant fields to speak of their experiences, especially in each of their particular work fields. Rather than a typical lecture style, though, the speakers will present to small groups, allowing for a more private environment and encouraging personalized questions so students can really focus and participate in each topic.
Lunch will be provided for all in attendance, followed by Varland as the keynote speaker.
is excited to share with the students what he has learned since his graduation from BHSU, especially through his employment with the Green Bay Packers, Sprint, Samsung, and currently, Apple. Varland’s ‘carpe diem’ attitude while watching a Super Bowl game in college inspired him to take a chance, and because of it, he is now able to share his success with an international multi-million dollar company that sought him out personally.
Nelson says that Varland serves as an amazing example to those who are about to graduate, proving that taking chances and knowing your capabilities can often lead you to places that you may have never expected.
BHSU plans to offer the seminar every semester.
