Dr. John Allred, Assistant Vice President for Academic Records and Student Services at Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah, has been named Vice President for Enrollment Management at Black Hills State University.

BHSU President Dr. Laurie Nichols welcomes Allred to BHSU and noted that she is looking forward to his leadership of the University’s renewed focus on enrollment.

“Dr. John Allred has shown tremendous success in his career and we welcome him to BHSU,” Nichols said. “I know his education, leadership approach, and professional experience will provide a strong foundation as he leads the enrollment, financial aid, registrar, Veteran’s, TRIO, and student success divisions at BHSU to meet goals and provide exceptional service to our students.”

Allred has held a number of administrative positions at Southern Utah University since he began as registrar there in 2010. He is recognized for his expertise as a process engineer, using technology to address challenges and create solutions while providing exceptional leadership on campus. Allred believes relationships with students throughout their college careers are key to retention and degree achievement. He has collaborated with faculty on innovative programs and education models. Allred has also provided leadership at his current university in navigating the most recent responses to COVID-19.

He previously served as the registrar at the University of Alaska Anchorage and as registrar and associate director of admissions at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He also has experience working in residence life and has served as a faculty member.

“My family and I are excited to join the Black Hills State University community. I am looking forward to beginning our work together at the University in the beginning of July. This is a challenging time to implement new plans and strategies, as the playing field seems to shift on a daily basis,” Allred said. “I look forward to meeting our team and rolling up our sleeves together to capitalize on opportunities.”

Allred earned his doctorate in education from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in Educational Leadership and Policy. He has a master’s degree from Bowling Green State University and a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah.

Dr. Lois Flagstad, the current Vice President for Enrollment and Student Affairs, announced in January her plans to retire at the end of June.

Statement from President Nichols

It is with a troubled heart that we write this note of concern and support for the Black community. The events over the last few weeks and following the tragic senseless deaths of African Americans in Georgia, Kentucky, and Minnesota have yet again brought racial injustices to the forefront.
