Dr. Priscilla Romkema, a Black Hills State University alum who previously served as a dean and professor at the University, has been named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at BHSU.

Romkema is currently President of the Monument Health Foundation in Rapid City, a position she has held for three years. Prior to that she served as a faculty member and in administrative positions at BHSU. She began working at BHSU in 1997 as an assistant professor. Her leadership and expertise propelled her to positions as a chair, director, and dean.

BHSU President Laurie Nichols praised Romkema’s experience, outlook, and dedication to the University and noted that she is looking forward to welcoming her back to campus this summer.

“Dr. Priscilla Romkema brings a multitude of experiences and expertise,” Nichols said. “I’m confident that her approach and longstanding connection with BHSU will be a positive force for the University. The synergy she brings with community members and businesses is exemplary. She will be instrumental as BHSU continues to provide high-quality education and create workforce opportunities in the region.”

"I look forward to drawing upon my past experiences in higher education and health care philanthropy to work with and support President Laurie Nichols as she continues to propel BHSU forward as an outstanding institution,” Romkema said.

“My commitment to current and prospective students will be that their academic journey at BHSU will position them to enter the workforce with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed in businesses and organizations; pursue further education for personal and professional purposes; and positively impact their communities through their civic involvement. I believe that meaningful and impactful educational experiences transform individuals, their families and communities. I welcome this exciting opportunity to work with the exceptional faculty, staff and administrators at BHSU so that we may continue making a difference in the lives of students," Romkema added.

Romkema is known throughout the community for her leadership with a number of community and professional organizations in the areas of business, engineering technology, natural sciences and education. She is also a marathon runner, who has completed the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon, and is often seen running throughout Spearfish.

Romkema started her higher educational career at BHSU, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in music. She later earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Wyoming.

Dr. Chris Crawford, the current Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at BHSU, announced in January his plans to retire at the end of June.
