BHSU named to Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 list
BHSU was named to the Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 rankings list by Military Times. The Military Times Best distinction, formerly Best for Vets, recognizes BHSU for its commitment to providing quality educational opportunities to America's veterans and military-connected students.
Military Times today announced that Black Hills State University was named to its Military Times Best: Colleges 2018 rankings, formerly known as Best for Vets. This is the sixth year BHSU has been honored as one of the best colleges for veterans by Military Times.
"Of the hundreds of schools that applied, fewer than half received the Military Times Best: Colleges designation this year. Only the best made the cut," said George Altman, the Military Times editor in charge of the rankings. "For the past eight years, we've seen colleges and universities consistently increasing their resources, revising their policies and improving their academic outcomes for military and veteran students. The Military Times Best: Colleges rankings showcase the very best of these efforts."
Best Colleges 2018 is an editorially independent news project that evaluates the many factors that help make colleges and universities a good fit for service members, military veterans and their families. More than 600 colleges took part in this year's detailed survey and 218 were named to the list.
The rankings factor in the results of Military Times' annual survey, a comprehensive school-by-school assessment of veteran and military student services and rates of academic achievement.
BHSU has a Veterans Center on campus in Spearfish and in Rapid City. Services offered at BHSU to assist military members and their families with academic and social needs include:
In 2014, Dr. Tom Jackson, Jr., BHSU President, debuted a reduced-tuition rate for military at BHSU-Rapid City. The reduced-tuition rate covers the full cost of a military student's education when taking into account the federal government's tuition assistance for military personnel. The program has since been expanded throughout South Dakota.
Military Times' annual Best Colleges survey asks colleges and universities to document an array of services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties and to describe many aspects of veteran culture on a campus. Military Times also factors in data from the Veterans Affairs and Defense Departments, as well as three Education Department sources: the IPEDS Data Center, College Scorecard data and the Cohort Default Rate Database.
The rankings are published in a Military Times magazine sent to subscribers the week of Nov. 20, as well as online at MilitaryTimes.com, ArmyTimes.com, NavyTimes.com, AirForceTimes.com and MarineCorpsTimes.com.
