Recent graduate will present upcoming BHSU Geek Speak about whistleblowing
Cody Drolc, Black Hills State University alum who graduated as a University Honors Scholar, will explore government exposure in his Geek Speak lecture Thursday, March 30 at 4 p.m. in Jonas Hall, room 110 at BHSU. Drolc is now a Ph.D. student at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Cody Drolc, a Black Hills State University alum who graduated as a University Honors Scholar, will examine how the world changed following Edward Snowden's exposure of government surveillance in the next Geek Speak lecture at BHSU. Drolc is now pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Drolc will present "Bad bureaucrats? The future of whistleblowing in a post-Snowden world" Thursday, March 30 at 4 p.m. in Jonas Hall room 110 on the BHSU campus. Drolc says we should recognize that disclosing information that is in the public's interest is not always in the government's best interest.
"Snowden's disclosure was particularly important because the information affected every single person in the U.S. Armed Services. With this new information on government spying, citizens altered their behavior and put their government under closer inspection," says Drolc.
Drolc says whistleblowing is political and that it is ironic that the multitude of legal protections safeguarding whistleblowers against reprisal do not carry the force of law.
"Spying activity and questionable military conduct did not stop after 2013, but the government had to find a way to plug the proverbial leak. So, we will be exploring changes in the national security state that will make disclosures like Snowden's a relic of a simpler time," says Drolc.
The following on-campus Geek Speak presentations, which are held Thursdays at 4 p.m. in Jonas Hall, room 110, are scheduled for this semester:
