BHSU Ruddell Gallery to Showcase DakotaWorks art show
Black Hills State University alum Sandra Newman, will have her oil painting "After the Storm" on display in the BHSU Ruddell Gallery. The painting is part of the 19th Annual South Dakota Health Care Association Dakota MasterWorks Art Show, which will be on display in the Ruddell Gallery from Nov. 23 through Jan. 8.
The Black Hills State University Ruddell Gallery will showcase the winning exhibits of the 19th Annual South Dakota Health Care Association (SDHCA) Dakota MasterWorks Art Show in its next installation. BHSU alum Sandra Newman is one of the winning artists featured.
The SDHCA Dakota MasterWorks Art Show is a creative art show and competition for artists ages 60 and older. Judges awarded first, second and third places, Honorable Mention and Best of Show to artwork in seven mediums and two different age groups. Attendees of the competition, held in October, selected People's Choice winners. The first, second and third place winners, along with the Best of Show and People's Choice awards in each category will be exhibited during the show, which opens on Nov. 23.
"The Ruddell Gallery is proud to provide west river with the opportunity to view the talents of the Dakota MasterWorks artists," said Dave Wilson, professor of art at BHSU.
The works will be displayed in the Ruddell Gallery on the second floor in the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union Nov. 23 through Jan. 8. The Ruddell Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Newman was awarded first place in the experienced category for her oil painting "After the Storm." Her painting will be part of the Ruddell Gallery display.
"It's a nice opportunity," Newman said of her working displayed at her alma mater. "You put so much work in on something. It's nice to get it up on the wall so others can get an idea of how you were feeling or what you were seeing when you painted it. Hopefully it can bring a little joy to someone else."
Newman painted "After the Storm" while she was on a trip to Idaho. She was drawn to the unusual lighting of the scene in her painting.
"It had just stormed and I came down a country road. This house was in the grass and trees and they just lit up with the setting sun, and the dark sky from the passing storm," she said. "It looked so neat."
This is Newman's second year participating in the SDHCA Dakota MasterWorks Art Show. She greatly enjoys entering her work in the contest each year and receiving the recognition from her peers and the judges, she said.
