BHSU invites community to 10th annual Madrigal Dinner
The Black Hills State University Madrigal Dinner is Dec. 3-5, at 6:30 p.m. in Clare & Josef Meier Hall on the BHSU campus. This popular musical event usually sells out proceeds go toward the choir and the Friends of Music Scholarship funds.
Featuring aristocracy, or elaborate costuming, beautifully performed Christmas songs, something about the food and medieval Renaissance atmosphere - the community is invited to 10th annual Madrigal Dinner presented by the Black Hills State University music department.
Tickets are now available for the Madrigal Dinner, a BHSU fundraising event and will take place Dec. 3-5, Meier Hall at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the event, including dinner, are $40 each. The proceeds will go toward the BHSU choir and the Friends of Music Scholarship funds.
The Madrigal Dinner features an ensemble of 16 singers that specializes in performing early music each fall semester. The singers, in Renaissance garb, will portray a 16th Century king, queen, and court who have invited the audience to a Christmas feast in the castle's great hall.
"It's a unique event held right after Thanksgiving, a Christmas themed event. It's a nice way to kick off Christmas season. It's a dinner and theatre production with focus on music performance and actors in Renaissance attire," said Dr. Jonathan Nero, BHSU assistant professor in music, who organizes the event each year.
According to Nero, the program will include holiday songs such as "Silent Night," "Bring a Torch Jennette Isabella," "Boars Head Carol," "Make We Joy," The Wexford Carol" and "Gloucestershire Wassail." The sacred and secular Renaissance music will include composers such as William Byrd, Juan del Encina, Claudio Monteverdi, John Dowland and Francis Pilkington.
"In the Renaissance era it was common for people of the court to invite their friends over for dinner and perform music. We are trying to emulate that. This year's dinner is more scripted than last year we have more dialogue," said Taylar Perez, mass communication major from Cheyenne, Wyo., and a performer in this year's Madrigal Dinner.
Dinner is catered by BHSU Dining Services, A'viands. The menu includes caraway spiced lentil soup with minted yogurt as a starter dish. The main course will be pork crown roast with apple pecan stuffing followed by pumpkin spiced bread pudding for dessert.
