Learn the latest trends in photography equipment as Black Hills State University hosts a guest lecture with a Canon representative.

The BHSU photography program and photography club, Shutterbuzz, will host Matthew Carmen of Canon on Thursday, March 19, at 9 a.m. in Club Buzz. The event is free and open to the public.

Carmen, who is the Canon Pro Products Business Development Division representative, will demonstrate new photo and video equipment from Canon and answer questions attendees may have on the products.

Steve Babbitt, professor of mass communication at BHSU, said this a prime opportunity for students and photography enthusiasts to speak with an expert in the photography industry.

"He&rsquos going to show us the latest and greatest pieces of equipment hitting the market," Babbitt said. "We&rsquoll get the chance to hold and test that equipment ourselves."

This event is one of several that Canon sponsors through a partnership with BHSU, which began five years ago after a donation of cameras, lenses and other equipment to the photography program at BHSU. The company also has donated two dozen laser ink printers, which were used in the photography and art departments.

In addition to the donated equipment, Canon sponsors a Canon Explorer of Light speaker once a year on the BHSU campus. The Canon Explorer of Light lectures, which are free and open to the public, feature influential professional photographers and videographers whose work in known throughout the world.

The donations and added educational opportunities have allowed BHSU photography students to excel in the program, Babbitt said. BHSU was the only university in South Dakota to have students selected in this year&rsquos Photographer&rsquos Forum magazine 35th Annual College &amp High School Photography Competition. Fourteen students were selected and two received honorable mention awards. Students also exceled during the American Advertising Federation&rsquos Black Hills American Advertising Awards in February. Seven students earned 13 awards, including a Best of Show.
