The Black Hills State University campus and community celebrate the annual Swarm Days this week with events influenced by the "Sting lightning" theme.  Events include carnivals, pep rally, a hike, alumni awards, homecoming football game and parade.

"The 1950s and Grease are the inspiration for the week and Sting Lightning," said Erica Whitiker, student engagement and programming coordinator.

The parade begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday proceeding down St. Joe Street, Jackson Boulevard, and then Main Street in Spearfish.  Community members can register their floats for the parade through Wednesday.

"Students are always very proud of the parade," said Whitiker.  "They're very proud seeing the community come out to support us."

Children and their parents in Spearfish and surrounding areas are invited to attend the Kiddie Carnival on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Campus Green.  Games, prizes, and food will be provided at no charge.

Lyle Hare Stadium gates open at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. concert on Wednesday featuring "Cover Drive." Tickets are $10 for community members.

John Reiners, head football coach, said the football team will continue their momentum after bringing home the Homestake Trophy last weekend.

"Homecoming will be our first conference game," Reiners said.  "The team looks forward to opening our conference season at home with a nice crowd and defending our two-year winning record against Fort Lewis."

An Awards Luncheon, Hall of Fame Dinner, and 1968-1973 football team reunion will celebrate alumni returning to campus.

"We also invited disc jockeys and former advisors of the KBUH campus radio station to celebrate the 40th anniversary of going on the air," said Tom Wheaton, director of alumni relations.  "We have alumni who were on the air in 1974 traveling to Swarm Days from California and the very first DJ who now lives in Belle Fourche will also be at Friday&rsquos celebration."
