The National Endowment for the Humanities Announces Grant
Opportunities
- Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced
research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public's
understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce
scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on
broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions,
or other scholarly tools. Summer stipends support full-time work on
a humanities project for a period of two months. Applicants may be
faculty or staff members of colleges, universities, or primary or
secondary schools, or they may be independent scholars or writers.
Deadline: Oct. 2, 2006. See
http://fedgrants.gov/Applicants/NEH/OPUB/OPO/FT/Grant.html for
details.
- Scholarly Editions Grants support the preparation by a
team of at least two editors and staff of texts and documents that
are currently inaccessible or available in inadequate editions.
Projects involving significant literary, philosophical, and
historical materials are typical in this grant program, but other
types of work, such as musical notation, are also eligible.
Applicants should demonstrate familiarity with the best practices
recommended by the Association for Documentary Editing or the Modern
Language Association Committee on Scholarly Editions. Editions
produced with NEH support contain scholarly and critical apparatus
appropriate to the subject matter and format of the edition. This
usually means introductions and annotations that provide essential
information about the form, transmission, and historical and
intellectual context of the texts and documents involved.
Deadline: Nov. 1, 2006. The link to the full announcement
is available at
http://fedgrants.gov/Applicants/NEH/OPUB/OPO/RQ/Grant.html.
- Fellowships for University Teachers support individuals
pursuing advanced research in the humanities that contributes to
scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of the
humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles,
monographs on specialized subjects, books on broad topics,
archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other
scholarly tools. Fellowships support full-time work on a humanities
project for a period of six to twelve months. Applicants may be
faculty or staff members of colleges, universities, or primary or
secondary schools, or they may be independent scholars or writers.
Deadline: May 1, 2006. See
http://fedgrants.gov/Applicants/NEH/OPUB/OPO/FA/Grant.html for
details.
- Fellowships for College Teachers and Independent Scholars
support individuals pursuing advanced research in the humanities
that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's
understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce
scholarly articles, monographs on specialized subjects, books on
broad topics, archaeological site reports, translations, editions,
or other scholarly tools. Fellowships support full-time work on a
humanities project for a period of six to twelve months. Applicants
may be faculty or staff members of colleges, universities, or
primary or secondary schools, or they may be independent scholars or
writers.
Deadline: May 1, 2006. Details are available at
http://fedgrants.gov/Applicants/NEH/OPUB/OPO/FB/Grant.html.
- Grants for Fellowship Programs at Independent Research
Institutions (FPIRI) support fellowships at institutions devoted
to advanced study and research in the humanities. NEH fellowships
provide scholars with access to resources that might not be
available at their home institutions. Fellowship programs may be
administered by independent centers for advanced study, libraries,
and museums in the United States, or American overseas research
centers or other organizations that have expertise in promoting
research on foreign cultures.
Deadline: Sept. 1, 2006. See
http://fedgrants.gov/Applicants/NEH/OPUB/OPO/RA/Grant.html for
more information.
- Collaborative Research Grants support original research
undertaken by a team of two or more scholars; or research
coordinated by an individual scholar that, because of its scope or
complexity, requires additional staff and resources beyond the
individual's salary.
Eligible projects include:
- research that significantly adds to knowledge and
understanding in the humanities;
- conferences on topics of major importance in the humanities
that will benefit ongoing research;
- archaeology projects that interpret and communicate the
results of archaeological fieldwork. Projects may encompass
excavation, materials analysis, laboratory work, field reports,
and preparation of interpretive monographs;
- translations into English of works that provide insight into
the history, literature, philosophy, and artistic achievements
of other cultures; and
- research that uses the knowledge, methods, and perspectives
of the humanities to enhance understanding of science,
technology, and medicine.
These grants support full-time or part-time activities for
periods of one to three years. Support is available for various
combinations of scholars, consultants, and research assistants;
project-related travel; field work; applications of information
technology; and technical support and services. All grantees are
expected to communicate the results of their work to the appropriate
scholarly and public audiences.
Deadline: Nov. 1, 2006. For more information see
http://fedgrants.gov/Applicants/NEH/OPUB/OPO/RZ/Grant.html.
Teaching American History Grant Program (ED)
Teaching American History grants, funded by the Department of
Education, support projects to raise student achievement by improving
teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of traditional
American history. Grant awards assist local educational agencies (LEAs),
in partnership with entities that have extensive content expertise, to
develop, document, evaluate, and disseminate innovative, cohesive models
of professional development. By helping teachers to develop a deeper
understanding and appreciation of traditional American history as a
separate subject within the core curriculum, these programs improve
instruction and raise student achievement.
Deadlines: Deadline for Notice of Intent to Apply is Jan. 6,
2006. Deadline for Transmittal of Applications is Feb. 3, 2006. See
www.access.gpo.gov/nara/index.html for details.
