On-campus employment is available. Students may search for employment opportunities upon arrival. All students who wish to engage in on-campus employment will need to obtain a social security card in Rapid City, SD. F-1 and J-1 students are allowed to work 20 hours per week on-campus and 40 hours per week on-campus during breaks and holidays.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Students who wish to work on campus should notify the Office of International Relations and Global Engagement to receive a work authorization letter in order to obtain a social security number. This number (issued by the government) is needed before starting employment.
Curricular Practical Training is defined by USCIS “to be alternative work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum that is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school”. F-1 students have this opportunity if the training directly relates to their field of study, and they will be receiving academic credit. F-1 students will need to receive approval from their academic adviser and approval from the Internship Coordinator in their department for CPT to be authorized. CPT can be full-time or part-time, but 12 months of full-time CPT makes students ineligible for OPT. Talk to the Office of International Relations and Global Engagement for specific regulations. The CPT Student Application can be downloaded and will need to be turned into the Office of International Relations & Global Engagement 15 days before the start date.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Optional Practical Training is a temporary employment opportunity for F-1 students to gain experience in their field of study, at each educational level. Pre-Completion and Post-Completion OPT is available. Post-completion OPT can be completed for up to 12 months. Students in the STEM field have the opportunity to extend their OPT beyond the 12 months. OPT is authorized by the USCIS. Talk to the Office of International Relations and Global Engagement for specific regulations, and also find them on the OPT Student Application.
