The creativity and writing talents of seven Black Hills State University students were recently recognized during the annual Stewart Bellman Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Writing.
The Bellman awards, named for the late BHSU English professor Dr. Stewart Bellman, recognize the best writing produced in BHSU courses during the year. Eight awards were giving in three separate categories: composition, literature and general academic writing.
The 2014 winners in the composition I and II category include: Shaley Lensegrav, mass communication major from Meadow, for “The Children’s Nature” and “The Problem with Population; Denim Lind,
English education major from Sheridan, Wyo., for “A Leap into the Deep Blue of Life”; Michael Hurst, biology major from Spearfish, for “The System of Objects”; and Amanda Jensen, English major from Rapid City, for “Going Home.”
The winner in the literature category is Timmi Baldwin, English education major from Spirit Lake, Iowa, for “The Hunger Game: Consumption of the Female Protagonist in Posthuman Young Adult Literature.”
Earning awards in the general academic writing category include: Jordan Louks, political science major from Spearfish, for “Leo Tolstoy’s Christian Anarchism: Spark at the Turn of the Century”; and Kimberly Kaufmann, history major from Cheney, Kan., for “The Surprising Effects of Lenin’s Soviet Russia.”
Bellman was a fixture on the BHSU campus during his 30 years as a professor. From 1966 to 1996, Bellman was a champion of both students and faculty, and he worked tirelessly for the advancement of both. He served as president of the South Dakota Council of Teachers of English, chaired the South Dakota Humanities Council, and founded the Dakota Writing Project. He served as faculty advisor to the “Green Bowl Review” and in 1995 Bellman was awarded the BHSU Distinguished Faculty Award.
Bellman and his wife, Dr. Wanda Bellman, retired in the mid-90s and the couple maintained their devotion to BHSU. In 2001 they were honored as co‐recipients of the BHSU Alumni Association Special Service Award.
