Black Hills State University President Kay Schallenkamp made a surprise visit to BHSU alum Erin Marsh’s classroom to congratulate the teacher on her Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Marsh, who teaches math at the Pierre Indian Learning Center, was in Washington, D.C., accepting the prestigious award. Her students made signs expressing their excitement and pride for their teacher. Marsh was among the 100 educators nationwide to receive the award, the nation’s highest honor for K-12 teaching in these fields. Marsh and BHSU alum Ann Anderson, Belle Fourche fifth-grade science teacher, were the only two South Dakota educators honored with the prestigious award.
