SPEARFISH …Dr. Symeon Waseen, assistant professor of music at Black Hills State University, will bring his musical talents to the Rapid City stage during a concert at the Black Hills Piano Gallery Sunday, Sept. 8 at 4:30 p.m.
Waseen will perform explosive works by Beethoven and Bartok as well as some of his own compositions including the South Dakota Music Teachers Association-commissioned piece Five Moments with guest soprano Dr. Nancy Roberts, BHSU assistant professor of music.
Waseen has studied under the tutelage of Thomas Wegren, Marilyn Shrude, Robert Morris, and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon. In addition to composing, Waseen is an active performer, specializing in music by contemporary composers, and has premiered several works written by himself and his colleagues. He has performed or had works performed at events such as the national SEAMUS Conference, Heidelberg New Music Festival, Bowling Green New Music Festival, Western Illinois University New Music Festival, College of Southern Nevada New Music Festival, and has been awarded the Eastman School of Music "Wayne Brewster Barlow Prize" for his Concerto for Voice and Voices. He has been teaching theory, composition, and piano at BHSU since 2010.
