Shawnda Carmichael, director of the Career Center at Black Hills State University, was recently recognized for her involvement and leadership with the Black Hills Regional Job Fair.
Peggy Schlecter, president-elect of the South Dakota Career Planning & Placement Association and dean of students at National American University, surprised Carmichael at a staff meeting with the presentation of a plaque to honor her work with the job fair. Carmichael was the 2007 chairperson of the Black Hills Regional Job Fair.
According to Schlecter, this year’s fair had a record number of vendors with over 120 vendors and 2,000 job seekers in attendance.
“To organize an event of this size and importance, Carmichael chaired a committee with members representing the business and higher education communities in the Black Hills. Carmichael is an enthusiastic supporter of the mission of the job fair and goes above and beyond what is required to be sure that the maximum number of individuals are reached,” said Schlecter.
Dr. Kristi Pearce, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at BHSU, praised Carmichael for her efforts with the job fair and noted that she represents BHSU as a professional leader in the field of career services for the region.
“This award illustrates how important Carmichael’s energy, enthusiasm and strong organizational skills are to the university,” said Pearce.
