The Black Hills State University music program will host several concerts during April. All performances will take place in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall on the BHSU campus. Events scheduled are:
A Night in France, Faculty Concert, Thursday, April 12 – 7:30 p.m.
An evening of French music will be performed by BHSU music faculty and will feature works by Debussy, Ravel, Messiaen, Ibert, and others. Performing will be Dr. Symeon Waseen, piano; Dr. Jonathan Nero, voice; Christopher Hahn, trumpet; Amber Waseen, flute; Dr. Nancy Roberts, voice; and Dr. Randall Royer, English horn.
First Fridays, Breakfast with the Arts, Friday, April 13 – 9:30 a.m.
A short music program by a music student or faculty member will be showcased during the First Friday event, which will be held in Meier Hall, room 128. The program will offer a preview of opera scenes from the upcoming opera concert. Free coffee and muffins will be available.
Dakota Chamber Concert, Sunday, April 15 – 2:30 p.m.
The Dakota Chamber Orchestra will host a spring concert. The concert will feature a wide assortment of orchestral works and is conducted by Dr. Randall Royer.
Concert Choir, American Song, Tuesday, April 17 – 7:30 p.m.
The BHSU Community Chorale, Chamber Singers and Women’s Chorus, directed by Dr. Jonathan Nero, will perform “American Song,” a concert of American folk song favorites.
Opera, Fairy Tales and Faraway Places, Thursday, April 19 – 7:30 p.m.
A collection of opera and musical theater scenes will be performed in the concert titled "Fairy Tales and Faraway Places." All scenes will be sung in English and will feature works from Hansel and Gretel, Into the Woods, Don Giovanni, Coronation of Poppea, and Carmen. The concert features great music and fine costumes.
BHSU Spring Choral Concert, Sunday, April 22 – 2:30 p.m.
The BHSU Spring Choral Concert will include a variety of music performed by the BHSU Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Women’s Chorus, conducted by Dr. Jonathan Nero. Please arrive early as seating is limited.
BHSU Concert Band, Monday, April 23 – 7:30 p.m.
The BHSU Concert/Community Band will host a spring concert. The band, under the direction of Christopher Hahn, will perform a variety of traditional and non-traditional band pieces.
BHSU Jazz Ensemble Concert, Thursday, April 26 – 7:30 p.m.
A variety of jazz styles will be performed during the BHSU Jazz Ensemble concert, conducted by Dr. Randall Royer.
Spring Composers Forum, Monday, April 30 – 7:30 p.m.
New music composed by BHSU students will be the focus of this premiere event. The program will include music for acoustic instruments and digital audio playback, avant-garde choral music, Fluxus-influenced stage pieces, blues, and much more.
