The Black Hills State University Department of Music will present, Spring Opera Potpourri, an evening of opera scenes, Friday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clare and Josef Meier Recital Hall.
The program includes short excerpts from Cinderella, H.M.S Pinafore, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutti, The Marriage of Figaro, and The Telephone. Performers are BHSU music majors who have been participating in an opera workshop this semester. The scenes are directed by Dr. Nancy Roberts, associate professor of music.
According to Roberts, “Opera is a very emotional type of performance. It is great for music students to have this opportunity to stretch their emotional capabilities, develop their dramatic skills, and acquire stage experience.” This is the third year of the opera workshop and Roberts believes the opera workshop experiences have helped BHSU students win state voice competitions. It also has prepared the more advanced voice students to participate in the more rigorous and selective Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, held on the BHSU campus June 12-26.
The event is free and open to the public. Donations are always welcome and benefit the Friends of Opera, who use the money to provide scholarships for summer opera students.
