Black Hills State University students, faculty, and community members will perform piano duets as a part of the Bellman Brown Bag Series, Wednesday, Dec. 8 at noon at the Matthews Opera House in Spearfish.
The Spearfish Piano Duet Club will present “Sounds of the Season.” The club has performed at the popular Brown Bag series every December since 2004. Performers include BHSU students: Anna Arch, freshman from Pierre; Kendra Barrett, freshman from Belle Fourche; Robin Nakajima, junior from Newell; Jade Neeman, freshman from Pierre; and Raquel Sweat, freshman from Broadus, Mont. Other performers include: Jean Arehart, Sandra Asheim, Mona Hauck, Ardyth Helmer, Rita Hicks, Laura Kolb, Lori Miller, BHSU music adjunct instructor; Dr. Symeon Waseen, BHSU instructor of music, and Dr. Janeen Larsen, BHSU retired music professor.
The Duet Club began in 2003, under the leadership of Synva Chrysler, as a way for intermediate and advanced pianists to maintain their piano skills and at the same time have fun and enjoy each others’ musical talents.
The Bellman Brown Bag Series was developed by the late Dr. Stewart Bellman in the 1990s. He engaged a line-up of speakers to present programs on a range of humanities topics each month. Dr. Bellman was a professor of English at Black Hills State University. His teaching career spanned 30 years.
Programs are presented on the second Wednesday of each month, from noon to 1 p.m., designed to begin and end within the lunch hour. Patrons are invited to bring their lunch, if desired, or simply enjoy an hour of learning and entertainment. The event is free and open to the public.
Several other BHSU professors are on the schedule for presentations. See the schedule below:
• Jan. 12 – Artist Dick Hicks, BHSU professor emeritus
• Feb. 9 – Author Kent Myers, writer-in-residence and associate professor of humanities at BHSU
