Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University football team defeated Valley City State on Saturday afternoon 31-10 to improve to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

“I’m really excited about getting this win against Valley City,” said head coach Jay Long.  “Valley City has played some really close games against some tough opponents.  As always, our defense played outstanding and it was great to get Drew (Nielsen) more involved in our rushing attack to get us the win.”

The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman Drew Nielsen who finished the contest with 144 yards on 24 carries.  Nielsen scored two touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets including a 55-yard run in the fourth quarter to make the score to 24-10.  Sophomore fullback Michael Jager had a breakout game gaining 41 yards on five attempts and hauling in two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets came up big both defensively and on special teams with a blocked punt in the fourth quarter by sophomore Stephen Easton giving the Yellow Jackets the ball at the Valley City State 15-yard line.  Senior Forest Sainsbury finished the contest with 11 tackles including 1.5 tackles for a loss.

The Yellow Jackets will look to extend their five game win streak as they take on Dickinson State in Dickinson, N.D. on Saturday, October 16 at 1 p.m. MT.
